Residential Treatment Counselor *

RESIDENTIALTREATMENT COUNSELOR (Multiple Full-Time/Part-Time Shifts Available)
Full-time (40-hours/week) position under thegeneral direction of the Unit Program Coordinator Responsible for working aspart of the treatment team to: Assist in the implementation of individualtreatment plans for children/youth focusing on vital areas such as therapeuticinteraction, crisis intervention, education, and activities. Provide supervision,counseling, and direct care for children/youth living in the group homesetting, serving as a surrogate parent, to teach values, life skills, andproblem-solving skills. Ensuring safety and security of children/youth whilealso maintaining a therapeutic environment. Effectively partnering withfamilies so that they feel empowered as a vital member of a team. Collaboratingwith co-located DCFS staff to complete intake process and orientations forchildren being admitted to Transitional Shelter Care Program. (applicable to Transitional Shelter Careprogram only)
Position responsibilities include, but are not limitedto:
Providesdirect service to children by:
Direct supervision and assistance, byfollowing the structure of the clients' daily routine; i.e., meal and snackpreparation, sleep, recreation, health, hygiene, safety, and discipline.
Assists children in the acquisition ofindependent living skills, such as management of money, care of clothing,successful completion of skills enhancement in doing cottage chores, jobs andkeeping appointments.
Cares for children when ill, being aware andattentive to individual health needs (including reporting on side effects)
Applies appropriate first aid.
Assists in medical and psychiatricappointments as directed.
Assists in maintenance of the home,furnishings, equipment, and grounds, including periodic cleaning, refurbishing,minor repair and monthly maintenance inventory; purchases household supplies.
Dispenses and records all prescribedmedications; notes and reports on side effects in the absence of HealthServices or Unit Program Coordinator; will adhere to medication storageprotocols if medication dispensing or intakes occur outside of Health Serviceshours. (applicable to Group Home and Transitional Shelter Care only)
Under the direct supervision of the Intakeand Transitional Shelter Care Program Supervisor and in collaboration with DCFSco-located staff, staff will conduct intakes and orientations to newly admittedchildren on a 24 hour 7 day a week basis. (applicable to Transitional ShelterCare only)
Coordinateswith clients treatment team, service plans and utilizes treatment techniquesand interventions to assist clients, families and significant others inachieving goals.
Managesthe behavior of residents through the use of approved behavioral managementtechniques/interventions; ensures compliances with agency policies.
Plansand participates in special occasion celebrations: admissions, birthdays,holidays, discharge, recreational activities, and community activities.
Plans,implements, lead, teach and facilitate the constructive use of leisure timethrough therapeutic activities.
Fosterspositive group experience through the development and application of principlesand practices of group dynamics
Developsand maintains professional skills by participating in supervision and staffdevelopment/in-service training.
Participatesin staff meetings, conferences, consultations, supervision and evaluation asscheduled.
Effectivelycommunicates with other staff including providing written and verbalobservations of children; maintains accurate records and reports on a dailybasis.
Maintainsconfidentiality regarding children, families, and the operations of the Agency.
Prepares,maintains and submits all documentation and reports promptly, maintainsconfidentiality in all matters of Agency personnel, operations, and clients.
SupportsAgency philosophies, policies, and practices.
Exercisesgood judgment in the performance of duties and responsibilities.
Maintainsa professional relationship with clients at all times.
Position requirements include, but are not limited to:
HighSchool Diploma with 2 years' experience working with Severely EmotionalDistributed (SED) clients or in mental health field. BA plus 2 years' experience working with SEDclients or in mental health field preferred.
Ability to plan, organize and maintain family-typeliving environment; parenting capacities for nurturing and guidance ofchildren; cooperate with other members of the treatment team; ability to formhelping relationships with children through empathy, understanding, acceptance,a non-judgmental attitude, and appropriate limit-setting to promote security;understanding group process and ability to initiate appropriate change, abilityto participate with children in carrying out residential responsibilities,ability to teach, advocate, support and facilitate development of independentliving skills in adolescents.
Thoughtfuldecision making and resourceful problem-solving ability, self-starter,self-aware, willingness to work productively with other adults, potential tobenefit from training and supervision, ability to learn and be open to adoptingagency's philosophy, methods, and procedures.
Effectivecommunication skills both oral and written
Computerskills are sufficient to meet demands of the job including Microsoft office andElectronic Reporting System software for program notes. Skills in maintainingdetailed, accurate, and complete records.
Abilityto be flexible and work in a changing environment, work varied hours includingevenings, nights, and weekends, and effectively as part of a team.
CurrentCalifornia drivers license and a driving record acceptable to the agency's'insurance carrier.
Sensitivityto the different cultures represented among the clients, families, and staff.
Basicunderstanding of age-appropriate behavior for children/adolescents.
Knowledgeof emergency procedures of the agency
Abilityto model positive behaviors and agency values, strong leadership and problem-solvingskills.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
